An unusual smell is more than a comfort issue. Musty, sewage, smoke or chemical odours can point to humidity, drainage, air-conditioning or maintenance problems.
Quick room check
Check drains, toilet seals, damp towels and visible moisture.
Notice whether the smell becomes stronger when the unit starts.
Inspect curtains, bedding, closets and upholstered surfaces.
What the smell may indicate
- Musty smell: trapped humidity, damp fabrics, condensation or limited ventilation.
- Drain or sewage smell: a dry trap, blocked drain, leaking seal or plumbing fault.
- Smoke smell: residue in curtains, upholstery or air-conditioning filters.
- Chemical smell: recent cleaning, painting or pest-control treatment.
Ventilate the room when safe, run water briefly in unused drains and remove wet clothing from enclosed spaces. Never mix cleaning products or pour chemicals into hotel drains.
When to report it
Report strong, persistent or sewage-like odours promptly. Explain where the smell is strongest, when it appears and whether it changes after using water or switching on the air conditioner.
- the odour affects breathing or sleep;
- visible mould, leaks or contaminated water are present;
- maintenance does not solve the problem;
- the smell repeatedly returns.
