Cuba Resort Key Cards: Lockouts, Power Slots and Replacement Tips

Room key cards at Cuba resorts are simple to use, but lost cards, worn magnetic strips and power-control slots can create avoidable problems. A few basic precautions can prevent lockouts and protect your room.

Test every key card after check-in

Before unpacking, confirm that each card opens the room door. If the resort provides more than one card, test both. A card that works once may still fail later if it is bent, scratched or stored beside a phone or magnetic object.

Keep the card separate from valuables

Do not write the room number directly on the card. Carry the room number separately and avoid keeping the card with your passport, cash and bank cards in one place. If a wallet is lost, separating these items reduces the risk of someone identifying the room.

Understand the electricity slot

Some rooms use a wall slot that activates lights or air conditioning when a key card is inserted. Removing the card may shut off power after a short delay. Do not assume the refrigerator, safe or charging outlets remain powered unless you have confirmed it.

If the card stops working

Try the card slowly and keep it flat against the reader. If the door remains locked, go to reception with identification. Staff may ask for the registered guest name or room details before issuing a replacement.

Do not force the handle or repeatedly strike the card reader. If the lock itself appears damaged, report it as a maintenance issue.

Lost or stolen key cards

Before checkout

• Return cards if the resort requests it.
• Check the safe, drawers and charging outlets.
• Do not leave a card in the room if luggage remains inside.
• Keep one working card until the room is fully cleared.

A room key card is easy to replace, but a lockout at the wrong moment can delay meals, excursions or airport departure. Testing the card early and reporting problems quickly is the simplest solution.
