Cuba uses more than one electrical standard. Travellers may encounter 110-volt and 220-volt outlets, sometimes within the same hotel or resort. Plug shapes can also vary, so checking your devices before departure is important.
Common voltage in Cuba
Many older properties use 110 volts, while newer or renovated hotels may also provide 220-volt outlets. Some rooms label the voltage beside the socket, but not all do. Never assume every outlet in the room is the same.
Plug types travellers may find
Outlets may accept North American flat-pin plugs, European round-pin plugs or multi-standard plugs. A universal travel adapter is usually the most practical option because room layouts and outlet types differ between hotels.
Check whether your device is dual voltage
Look at the charger label for an input range such as 100–240V, 50/60Hz. Most modern phone, tablet and laptop chargers are dual voltage and need only a plug adapter. Hair dryers, straighteners and small appliances may be single voltage and can be damaged if connected incorrectly.
Adapter versus voltage converter
A plug adapter changes the shape of the plug. It does not change voltage. A voltage converter is only needed when a device cannot accept the local voltage. High-power appliances can exceed the capacity of small converters, so leaving them at home is often safer.
Power outages and unstable supply
Electrical interruptions can affect charging, air conditioning, elevators, water pumps and hotel services. Charge essential devices whenever power is available and carry a power bank in hand luggage.
