Losing a phone, wallet, passport, room key or piece of luggage at a Cuba resort can quickly become stressful. Acting early, documenting the loss and speaking with the right staff members gives travellers the best chance of recovering the item or completing an insurance claim.
Check the last confirmed location first
Before reporting the item missing, return to the last place where it was definitely used or seen. Check the room, safe, bathroom, balcony, luggage, pool chair, beach bag, restaurant table and transfer vehicle. Ask travelling companions to check their belongings as well. Small objects are often moved accidentally during cleaning or packed into the wrong bag.
Contact the resort immediately
Report the loss to the front desk as soon as possible. Give a precise description, including the brand, colour, size, identifying marks, approximate value and the time and place where the item was last seen. Ask whether the resort has a security office, guest-services desk or formal lost-and-found register.
Request the name of the employee who records the report and note the date and time. A written record is far more useful than a verbal conversation if the item is not recovered.
Ask the correct departments
Different resort departments may hold found property separately before sending it to a central office. Depending on where the item disappeared, ask the front desk to contact:
- housekeeping for objects left in rooms, bathrooms or bedding;
- pool and beach staff for towels, bags, sunglasses and footwear;
- restaurant or bar supervisors for phones, wallets and cameras;
- security for valuables or incidents in public areas;
- the transfer representative for items left on a bus;
- airport staff or the airline for property lost during departure.
For a lost passport
A missing passport requires urgent action. Search carefully, report it to resort security and contact the appropriate Canadian consular service. Travellers may need a police report and emergency travel documents before they can leave Cuba. Keep digital and paper copies of the passport identification page separate from the original.
Do not place the only copy of important documents inside the same wallet or bag as the originals.
For a lost phone or tablet
Use the device-location service provided by Apple or Google, but avoid confronting anyone. Mark the device as lost, display a safe contact method and change important passwords if recovery appears unlikely. Contact the mobile carrier to suspend the SIM or eSIM when necessary.
Travellers should also protect email, banking and social-media accounts with strong passwords and two-factor authentication before departure.
For cash, cards or a wallet
Freeze or cancel missing bank cards immediately. Keep the telephone numbers for card issuers in a secure offline note. Because card access in Cuba can be unreliable, travellers should divide their money between more than one secure location rather than carrying the entire budget together.

Request written documentation
If an expensive item is not recovered, ask the resort or local authorities what written report can be provided. Travel insurers may request proof of ownership, purchase receipts, a police report, the resort incident report and evidence that reasonable precautions were taken.
Photograph important belongings before the trip and keep receipts for electronics, medical devices and other valuable property.
After checking out
Contact the resort quickly if an item is discovered missing after departure. Include the reservation name, room number, stay dates, tour operator, detailed description and reliable contact information. Ask how long found property is kept and whether shipping is possible.
International shipping from Cuba may be slow, expensive or unavailable. A trusted local contact or future traveller may sometimes be a more practical solution, but all arrangements should respect customs and airline rules.
Prevention before the trip
- Use the room safe for passports, spare cash and backup cards.
- Do not leave valuables unattended on beach or pool chairs.
- Label luggage inside and outside with current contact information.
- Use a distinctive phone case or luggage strap.
- Photograph passports, electronics and baggage before departure.
- Keep one backup payment method separate from the main wallet.
- Complete a final room inspection before checkout.
