Cuba Hotel Safes: Cash, Passports and Valuables

Hotel-room safes are useful in Cuba, but travellers should still use a layered approach for cash, passports and electronics. A safe reduces casual access; it does not remove every risk.

What to keep in the safe

• Passport when it is not needed outside the hotel
• Backup cash stored separately from daily spending money
• Insurance details and copies of travel documents
• Small electronics that are not being used

Check the safe when you arrive

Test the lock before placing valuables inside. Confirm that the door closes properly, the keypad responds and the reset instructions are clear. If the safe does not work, ask reception for assistance or a room change.

Do not keep everything in one place

Split cash into at least two locations. Carry only what you expect to spend that day and keep a separate emergency reserve. Store document copies offline on your phone and, when possible, in secure cloud storage.

Before check-out

Add the safe to your final room checklist. Travellers sometimes forget passports, cash or jewelry during a rushed departure.
