Smoking and vaping rules at Cuba resorts are not identical from one hotel to another. Some properties permit smoking in designated outdoor areas, while rooms, restaurants, lobbies, buses and other shared spaces may be restricted. Travellers should confirm the current rules directly with the hotel instead of relying on old reviews or assumptions.
Check the hotel policy before arrival
Ask whether smoking or vaping is allowed on balconies, terraces, beach areas, pool decks and outdoor bars. A room described as non-smoking may also prohibit smoking on its balcony. Policies can change after renovations, management changes or safety incidents.
When smoking access is essential, request written confirmation from the hotel or tour operator before booking.
Common restricted areas
Travellers should normally expect restrictions in enclosed or high-traffic spaces such as:
- guest rooms and indoor corridors;
- buffets and à la carte restaurants;
- lobbies, theatres and indoor bars;
- elevators and public washrooms;
- tour buses, airport transfers and taxis;
- children’s areas and medical facilities.
Follow posted signs and staff instructions. A lack of signage does not automatically mean smoking is permitted.
Balconies and patios
Balcony rules vary considerably. Smoke can enter neighbouring rooms through open doors, windows or ventilation systems. Even where balcony smoking is permitted, keep doors closed, use an appropriate ashtray and avoid dropping ashes or cigarette ends.
Never place smoking materials in a wastebasket unless they are fully extinguished. Dry vegetation, towels and balcony furniture can create a serious fire risk.
Vaping is not automatically permitted
Travellers sometimes assume that vaping is allowed wherever smoking is prohibited. Resorts may apply the same restrictions to cigarettes, cigars, heated-tobacco products and electronic cigarettes. Ask staff before using a device indoors or in a crowded outdoor area.
Airline, airport and customs considerations
Electronic cigarettes and spare lithium batteries generally require special packing precautions for air travel. Devices should not be used or charged on the aircraft, and batteries must be protected against accidental activation and short circuits. Airline rules can differ, so check the carrier’s current baggage policy before departure.
Travellers should also verify current Cuban entry rules for tobacco, vaping devices and related products. Do not assume that a product legally purchased in Canada can be imported without restriction.
Cigars and local purchases
Cuba is strongly associated with cigars, but resort rules still apply. Use designated areas and confirm whether the hotel allows cigar smoking at specific bars or terraces. Keep receipts for purchases and review Canadian customs allowances before returning home.
Respect neighbouring guests
Even in an approved outdoor area, smoke may affect children, older travellers and guests with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Choose a location away from entrances, dining tables, queues and crowded loungers whenever possible.

Fire safety matters
- Use only designated smoking areas.
- Extinguish cigarettes and cigars completely.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Keep smoking materials away from curtains, towels and dry landscaping.
- Do not disable smoke detectors.
- Report damaged outlets or unsafe charging conditions.
Our resort room safety checklist covers locks, balconies, electrical outlets and emergency exits.
Bottom line
Smoking and vaping policies differ between Cuba resorts and may vary by area within the same property. Confirm the rules before booking, follow designated-area signs and respect nearby guests. When travelling with a vaping device or tobacco products, verify airline and customs requirements before departure.
