Cuba can be challenging for travellers with reduced mobility because accessibility varies widely between airports, transfer vehicles, resorts, restaurants and public areas. A property may offer ramps or an adapted room while still having steep paths, narrow doors, uneven surfaces or limited access to the beach.
Confirm the airline requirements before booking
Contact the airline before departure and provide the exact type, dimensions and weight of the wheelchair or mobility scooter. Explain whether it folds, whether the battery can be removed and what assistance is needed at check-in, boarding, connections and arrival.
- Ask how early mobility equipment must be checked in.
- Confirm battery acceptance and packaging requirements.
- Request airport wheelchair assistance in advance.
- Ask whether the device will be returned at the aircraft door or baggage area.
- Photograph the equipment before handing it over.
Battery rules matter
Airline rules differ for lithium-ion, dry-cell and spillable batteries. Never assume a mobility scooter battery will be accepted without documentation. Carry the battery specifications, manufacturer information and any required disconnect or protective instructions.
Verify the airport transfer
Standard package-transfer buses may not have a lift, low floor or secure space for a powered wheelchair. A traveller who can transfer into a seat may still need confirmation that the chair or scooter fits in the luggage compartment.
Ask the tour operator or private-transfer company:
- whether the vehicle has a ramp or lift;
- whether the traveller must transfer from the chair;
- how the device will be secured;
- whether the driver can handle its weight safely;
- whether a backup vehicle is available if the assigned vehicle is unsuitable.
What to verify with the hotel
“Accessible room” can mean different things. Request written confirmation and, when possible, recent photos or measurements.
- Step-free route from reception to the room.
- Door width and turning space.
- Bed height and space beside the bed.
- Roll-in shower or shower threshold height.
- Grab bars and toilet clearance.
- Elevator location and reliability.
- Distance to restaurants, pool and beach.
- Availability of ramps, beach wheelchairs or accessible restrooms.
Plan for uneven surfaces
Sidewalks, paths and entrances may include broken pavement, sand, curbs, steps or steep slopes. Resort grounds can also be much larger than they appear in photos. Travellers using a manual wheelchair should consider whether a companion can assist on ramps or rough surfaces.
Protect essential equipment
- Bring a compact repair kit and the correct tools.
- Pack spare fuses, charger cables and small replacement parts.
- Label detachable pieces.
- Carry the charger in hand luggage when airline rules permit.
- Save photos of the device and serial number offline.
- Keep instructions for freewheel mode or manual release.
Prepare for power interruptions
Powered mobility equipment depends on reliable charging. Ask the hotel about outlet voltage, plug type and whether the room outlet remains powered when the key card is removed. Bring the correct adapter and verify that the charger supports the available voltage.
Travellers should also consider how many hours of use are available on one charge and what activities can be shortened if charging is interrupted.
Medication and health preparation
Keep medication, medical documents and essential supplies in hand luggage. Carry a written summary of medical needs, allergies and emergency contacts. Travel insurance should cover pre-existing conditions when applicable, emergency treatment and medical evacuation.
Build a backup plan
A strong backup plan should answer these questions:
- What happens if the wheelchair or scooter is delayed?
- Can the traveller safely use a manual chair temporarily?
- Who will be contacted if the transfer vehicle is inaccessible?
- Is there a second room option if the assigned room is unsuitable?
- How will the traveller manage during a power interruption?
