Cuba resorts can be enjoyable for older travellers, but the best hotel is not always the one with the most restaurants or the largest beach. Walking distances, elevators, room location, medical preparation and transportation can have a greater effect on comfort than the resort’s star rating.
Ask about walking distances before booking
Large resorts may require long walks between rooms, restaurants, the lobby, pools and the beach. A property that looks compact on a booking page may include several buildings, ramps, stairs and uneven outdoor paths.
Ask the hotel or tour operator whether a room can be requested near the lobby, buffet, elevator or beach access. Requests are not always guaranteed, so travellers should also ask what alternatives are available at check-in.
Check elevators and ground-floor options
Do not assume every building has an elevator. Some older resort sections may have only stairs, while elevators in other buildings may be temporarily unavailable. Travellers who cannot safely use stairs should request a ground-floor room or verify elevator access before booking.
For broader accessibility questions, consult our guide to accessible Cuba resorts.
Bring essential medication and documentation
Bring enough prescription medication for the entire trip plus a reasonable reserve in case of delay. Keep medication in original labelled containers and carry a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s note when appropriate.
Medication should remain in carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage. Travellers who need refrigeration should confirm the room setup and prepare a backup cooling plan. Our guide to keeping medication cold at Cuba resorts explains the main questions to ask.
Do not depend on finding supplies locally
Availability of familiar pharmacy products, mobility aids, batteries and personal-care supplies can be limited. Pack pain relievers, bandages, stomach medication, sunscreen, insect repellent, hearing-aid batteries and any specialized item used regularly.
Bring a written list of medical conditions, allergies, medications and emergency contacts. Keep one copy with the traveller and another with a companion.
Choose transportation carefully
Package transfers are convenient, but buses may involve high steps, narrow aisles and multiple hotel stops. Travellers with limited mobility should ask whether private transportation or an adapted vehicle is available.
When taking a taxi, confirm that the vehicle is easy to enter and that mobility equipment will fit. Folding walkers and compact wheelchairs are generally easier to transport than larger devices, but dimensions should be checked in advance.
Consider heat and hydration
Varadero’s heat and humidity can increase fatigue. Plan outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the afternoon, rest in shaded areas and drink water regularly. A hat, breathable clothing and supportive footwear are more useful than formal resort clothing during the day.
Air conditioning quality may vary by room and hotel. Review our guide to air conditioning at Cuba resorts before departure.
Food and dietary needs
Buffets can involve standing, carrying plates and waiting in line. Ask whether staff can help with seating or whether a quieter dining time is available. Travellers with allergies or strict dietary needs should carry translated information and suitable backup snacks.
Our food allergy guide for Cuba resorts provides additional preparation advice.
Travel insurance and emergency planning
Travel insurance should cover medical treatment, hospitalization, trip interruption and medical evacuation where applicable. Read exclusions carefully, especially for pre-existing conditions.
Keep the insurer’s emergency number, policy number and instructions in both paper and digital form. Do not rely on one phone battery or one person knowing the details.
Senior travel checklist
- Request a room near essential services.
- Verify elevator or ground-floor access.
- Pack medication in carry-on baggage.
- Bring extra batteries and personal-care supplies.
- Use supportive footwear for uneven paths.
- Plan for heat, shade and hydration.
- Confirm transportation can handle mobility equipment.
- Carry insurance and medical information.
A comfortable trip depends on matching the resort layout and services to the traveller’s actual needs. Asking precise questions before booking is more reliable than assuming that a hotel described as modern or luxurious will be easy to navigate.
