Travelling to Cuba with migraines requires more preparation than a standard packing list. Heat, dehydration, disrupted sleep, bright sun, alcohol, long airport days and changes in routine can all make symptoms harder to manage.
Bring all migraine medication from home
Do not rely on finding your usual prescription or over-the-counter medication in Cuba. Keep medicine in its original labelled packaging and carry a copy of your prescription or medication list.
- Pack preventive and rescue medication separately.
- Keep a small supply with you during excursions.
- Bring any anti-nausea medication prescribed for you.
- Use an insulated pouch when a product has specific temperature requirements.
Reduce common travel triggers
Drink water regularly, eat on schedule, limit alcohol, protect your eyes from intense sunlight and avoid allowing the hotel room to become excessively hot. A hat, quality sunglasses, sleep mask and reusable water bottle can be useful.
Prepare for the airport and flight
Long lines, missed meals, cabin pressure changes and poor sleep can contribute to symptoms. Keep medicine, water after security, snacks and sunglasses easily accessible.
Know when to seek urgent care
Seek medical assistance for a sudden severe headache unlike your usual migraines, symptoms after a head injury, confusion, weakness, fainting, fever, stiff neck, chest pain or difficulty speaking.
