Travelling to Cuba with sleep apnea is possible, but it requires more preparation than an ordinary resort stay. The main risks are not the flight itself: they are unreliable electricity, damaged equipment, humid conditions and the difficulty of replacing masks, tubing or power supplies locally.
Speak with your sleep clinic before travelling
Confirm that your condition is stable and ask whether your current machine is suitable for travel. Bring a copy of your prescription, machine settings and a brief medical summary. Keep these documents with your carry-on baggage.
Carry the CPAP as medical equipment
Do not place your only machine in checked luggage. Keep the device, mask, tubing, power adapter and prescription together in a protective carry-on case. Airlines may have specific rules for medical equipment, so confirm them before departure.
Prepare for power outages
Consider a compatible battery approved by the machine manufacturer. Test the battery before departure and know how many hours it can operate your device. A surge protector and a small extension cord can also be useful when outlets are limited.
Check voltage and plug compatibility
Many modern CPAP power supplies accept a wide voltage range, but this must be verified on the label. Bring the correct plug adapter. Never assume that every hotel room uses the same voltage or outlet type.
Protect the machine from humidity
Keep the device away from open windows, wet towels and direct air-conditioning condensation. Let the mask and tubing dry fully each day. Bring spare filters because dust and humidity can reduce performance.
Bring replacement supplies
- spare mask cushion or full backup mask;
- extra tubing;
- replacement filters;
- power adapter and cable;
- battery and charging cable;
- distilled-water alternative plan approved by your clinic.
Using water safely
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for humidifier water. If appropriate water is unavailable, ask your clinic whether temporarily using the machine without humidification is acceptable. Do not improvise with unsafe water.
Insurance and medical support
Declare sleep apnea and any related heart or respiratory conditions when purchasing insurance. Review our Cuba travel insurance guide and our medication and health-kit planning guide.
When to reconsider the trip
Delay travel if your sleep apnea is not controlled, if you have severe daytime sleepiness, recent cardiac symptoms or no safe backup for essential equipment. A clinician who knows your history should make the final recommendation.
