Pharmacies in Cuba: Medication and Health Kit Planning

Travellers should not assume that a Cuban pharmacy will have the medication, brand, dosage or medical supply they normally use. Availability can vary by city, pharmacy and week, so preparation before departure is essential.

Bring enough prescription medication

Pack a sufficient supply for the full trip plus a reasonable delay buffer. Keep prescription medication in its original labelled container and carry a copy of the prescription or a medical note when appropriate. The document should identify the generic drug name, dosage and reason for use.

Do not split all essential medication between checked bags. Keep the critical supply in carry-on luggage, because delayed or missing baggage can quickly become a health problem.

Prepare a practical travel health kit

Pain and fever medication that you normally tolerate
Oral rehydration salts
Stomach and diarrhea treatment recommended for you
Bandages, antiseptic, gauze and blister care
Insect repellent and after-bite treatment

Use generic medication names

Brand names may differ between countries. Save the generic name and exact dosage of every medication on paper and on your phone. This information is more useful to a doctor or pharmacist than a familiar Canadian brand name alone.

What pharmacies may not reliably provide

Travellers should be prepared for limited selection of prescription drugs, common over-the-counter products, child formulations, specialty dressings and replacement parts for medical devices. Even basic products can be unavailable temporarily. Never plan a trip around the assumption that a missing item can easily be purchased after arrival.

Storage and temperature

Some medications must remain within a specific temperature range. Ask your pharmacist how long the product can safely remain outside refrigeration and what type of insulated container is appropriate. Do not place temperature-sensitive medication directly against loose ice or allow it to freeze.

Travelling with needles or controlled medication

Carry supporting documents for injectable medication, syringes or controlled drugs. Keep everything in labelled packaging. Airline security, customs and insurance requirements may differ, so verify the applicable rules before departure.

When to contact a doctor instead of a pharmacy

Seek medical help when symptoms are serious, persistent or unusual, or when a prescription medication must be replaced. Contact your insurer before treatment when possible and keep the policy number, assistance telephone number and emergency contacts available offline.

Document medical expenses

Ask for medical reports, prescriptions and receipts. Photograph every document before leaving the clinic or pharmacy. These records may be needed for an insurance claim or follow-up care after returning home.
