Delayed luggage can turn the first day of a Cuba vacation into a stressful search for clothing, medication and basic supplies. Because some familiar products may be difficult to replace quickly, travellers should prepare their carry-on as if checked baggage might arrive one or two days late.
Report the baggage problem before leaving the airport
Go to the airline or baggage service desk before exiting the arrivals area. Provide the baggage tag receipt, flight details, hotel name, room information if available and a reliable phone number or email address.
Ask for a written report or reference number and confirm how updates will be provided. Photograph the report, baggage tag and contact information.
Tell the hotel and tour representative
Inform the hotel front desk and your tour operator representative as soon as possible. Leave your full name, airline, baggage reference number and expected delivery details. If you change rooms, hotels or destinations, update the airline immediately.
Do not assume luggage will be delivered automatically to the correct room without follow-up. Check periodically, but keep your reference number available so staff can identify the case.
What belongs in your carry-on
Medication, documents, electronics and irreplaceable items should never depend on checked luggage. A practical carry-on should include:
- Prescription medication for the complete trip.
- Passport, insurance documents and travel confirmations.
- One change of lightweight clothing and underwear.
- Swimsuit and simple sleepwear.
- Basic toiletries within airline liquid limits.
- Phone charger and essential device cables.
- Eyeglasses, contact-lens supplies and hearing-aid batteries.
- Small sunscreen and insect repellent containers.
Families should also carry enough diapers, formula, snacks and baby essentials for the first day. Review our Cuba resort baby supplies guide.
Keep receipts for emergency purchases
Airlines and travel insurers may reimburse reasonable essential purchases when baggage is delayed, but rules and limits vary. Keep every receipt and photograph it immediately. Buy only what is necessary until you understand the airline’s reimbursement policy.
Ask whether the airline requires original receipts, a claim form or proof of baggage delivery date. Do not wait until returning home to organize the documentation.
Replacing essentials at a Cuba resort
Hotel shops may carry basic toiletries, clothing and sunscreen, but selection, sizing and supply can be limited. Prices may also be higher than expected. Ask the front desk about the nearest store or pharmacy, but do not depend on finding a specific brand.
For clothing, choose versatile items that can be washed and dried quickly. Our guide to laundry at Cuba resorts explains common options.
Medication in checked luggage
If essential medication was packed in checked baggage, contact the airline, travel insurer and a medical professional immediately. Do not substitute an unfamiliar medication or dosage without qualified advice.
This is one reason medication should always remain in carry-on baggage. Travellers using insulin or temperature-sensitive drugs should also read our guide to keeping medication cold in Cuba.
When luggage is considered lost
A delayed bag is not automatically classified as lost. The airline will usually continue tracing it for a defined period. Keep notes of every call, message, promised delivery and expense. If the bag is later declared lost, the airline or insurer may request a detailed inventory of contents and estimated values.
Avoid exaggerating the claim. Provide accurate descriptions, purchase information when available and photographs of the bag or contents if you have them.
Before your next trip
- Photograph the outside of the suitcase.
- Place contact information inside the bag.
- Remove old airline tags.
- Use a distinctive strap or identifier.
- Split clothing between bags when travelling as a couple.
- Keep valuables and medication in carry-on baggage.
- Review baggage insurance limits before departure.
Delayed luggage is inconvenient, but a well-planned carry-on prevents it from becoming a medical or travel emergency. For current conditions affecting arrivals and resort services, consult Cuba Live.
