Checkout day at a Cuba resort can be simple, but travellers often run into avoidable problems when their airport transfer leaves several hours after the room must be vacated. Planning the final day in advance helps protect valuables, avoid missed transfers and make the wait more comfortable.
Confirm the checkout time early
Do not assume the checkout time is the same at every hotel. Check the information sheet in the room, ask the front desk or confirm through the resort application if one is available. It is better to verify the time the day before departure instead of waiting until the final morning.
Settle any outstanding charges, return borrowed items and ask whether towel cards, room keys or safe keys must be handed back. Keep the receipt until you have left the property.
Ask about late checkout
Late checkout may be available for a fee, but it normally depends on occupancy and the arrival schedule for the same room. A request is not guaranteed simply because it was made early.
Ask the front desk the day before departure and confirm the exact time, cost and room number. In some cases, the hotel may offer a courtesy room or shared shower room instead of extending the original room.
Use luggage storage carefully
Many resorts provide a luggage room near reception. Before leaving bags, remove passports, money, medications, electronics, jewellery and travel documents. Keep those items in a small personal bag that stays with you.
Take a photo of your luggage and any claim ticket. Make sure every suitcase is clearly identified with your name and contact information. Do not leave loose bags unattended in the lobby.
Prepare a final-day bag
Pack swimwear, a change of clothes, sunscreen, basic toiletries, medication, phone chargers and a reusable water bottle in a separate bag. This prevents you from reopening checked luggage while waiting for the transfer.
If you plan to use the beach or pool after checkout, ask where you can change and whether towels remain available after the wristband or room key is returned.
Protect the airport transfer
Confirm the pickup location and time directly with the tour representative, airline transfer desk or reception. Be in the lobby early. Transfer schedules may change, and waiting in another part of the resort can lead to a missed bus.
Keep passports and flight documents accessible. Review the practical steps in our Cuba airport transfer guide and the advice in our front desk communication guide.
Final checkout checklist
- Inspect drawers, the safe, bathroom and balcony.
- Check under the bed and behind curtains.
- Return keys, towel cards and borrowed items.
- Keep valuables with you.
- Photograph luggage before storage.
- Confirm the transfer time and meeting point.
- Arrive in the lobby early.
A calm final-day routine reduces stress and gives staff enough time to solve any billing, luggage or room-access issue before departure.
