Before booking
Discuss the trip with your doctor or allergist, especially if you have had anaphylaxis, severe asthma, or a recent reaction. Ask for a medical letter listing your allergies, medications, and the need to carry epinephrine in the aircraft cabin.
How many EpiPens or auto-injectors to bring
Bring at least two accessible auto-injectors at all times and additional backups for the room or travel companion. Availability in Cuba can be limited, so do not plan to replace an expired, damaged, lost, or used device locally.
Food allergies at resorts
Buffets create a high risk of shared utensils, reused cooking surfaces, unclear ingredients, and cross-contact. Speak directly with a chef or food-and-beverage manager. Simple freshly prepared meals are often safer than mixed sauces, desserts, fried foods, and dishes with unidentified garnishes.
Carry an allergy translation card
Carry a Spanish card naming the exact allergen and explaining that even a small amount can cause a life-threatening reaction. Include common ingredients and alternate names. Keep both a printed copy and a copy on your phone.
Emergency plan
- Use epinephrine immediately when anaphylaxis is suspected.
- Call for emergency medical help and inform hotel staff.
- Use the second dose if prescribed and symptoms persist or return.
- Do not stay alone after a reaction.
- Contact the travel insurer as soon as practical.
Insurance and medical care
Confirm that your policy covers pre-existing allergies and emergency treatment. Save the insurer’s international assistance number offline. Cuba requires travellers to have valid medical insurance, but policy exclusions still matter.
