Cuba customs rules affect luggage, electronics, food, medication, gifts and cash. Travellers should separate personal-use items from goods that could appear commercial, keep receipts for valuable equipment and review official limits shortly before departure.
Personal luggage versus imported goods
Clothing, toiletries and ordinary travel equipment are generally easier to identify as personal effects when quantities are reasonable for the length of the trip. Multiple identical new items may attract additional questions because they can look intended for resale.
Medication
Carry medication in original packaging when possible, along with a copy of the prescription or a medical letter. Keep essential medicine in carry-on luggage and verify airline rules for liquids, syringes and temperature-sensitive products.
Electronics
Phones, tablets, laptops, cameras and personal accessories should be organized so their personal use is clear. Bring chargers, adapters and serial-number records for valuable devices. Specialized communication equipment may be subject to additional controls.
Food and gifts
Food products can be restricted according to their origin, packaging and current animal-health or plant-health measures. Factory-sealed products are generally easier to identify than homemade or unpackaged food, but current official rules must still be checked.
Cash and valuables
Keep cash secure and divide it between trusted locations. Large amounts or valuable goods may need to be declared. Never carry packages for someone else unless you know exactly what they contain.
Items that require extra caution
- Drones and specialized radio equipment
- Large quantities of identical products
- Weapons or weapon-like objects

Before flying
