Cuba’s sun, heat, humidity, salt water, chlorine and insects can aggravate psoriasis, eczema and other sensitive-skin conditions. Careful packing and a simple daily routine can reduce flare-ups and make it easier to respond quickly if symptoms worsen.
Before departure
- Ask your doctor whether sun, heat or swimming could affect your condition or treatment.
- Bring enough creams, ointments, tablets or injections for the full trip plus a reasonable delay reserve.
- Keep prescription products in original labelled packaging.
- Carry a medication list using generic names.
- Test sunscreen, moisturizer and insect repellent at home before travelling.
What to pack
- Fragrance-free moisturizer and cleanser.
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for sensitive skin.
- Prescribed topical treatment.
- Loose, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
- A small supply of gentle dressings or gauze if skin cracks or bleeds.
- Any approved antihistamine or flare treatment recommended by your clinician.
- A clean protective pouch for medication.
Managing sun and heat
Use shade, lightweight clothing and regular hydration. Apply sunscreen according to the product instructions and reapply after swimming or heavy sweating. Some medications can increase sun sensitivity, so confirm precautions with a pharmacist or prescriber.
Swimming, salt and chlorine
Rinse with fresh water after the ocean or pool when possible, pat the skin dry and apply moisturizer. Avoid prolonged swimming when skin is cracked, infected or severely inflamed. Use water shoes to reduce cuts and irritation on hot or rough surfaces.
Insects and scratching
- Use a repellent that your skin tolerates.
- Wear light long sleeves and trousers when mosquitoes are active.
- Keep fingernails short to limit skin damage from scratching.
- Clean bites gently and watch for signs of infection.
Medication storage
Do not leave creams, injections or tablets in direct sunlight, a parked vehicle or hot checked baggage. Follow the manufacturer’s temperature instructions. When refrigeration is required, confirm hotel arrangements in advance and carry a backup cooling plan for transfers and outages.
When to seek medical help
Seek medical attention for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, pus, facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a significant reaction after medication, food or an insect bite. Keep insurance details and emergency contacts available offline.
