Cuba’s heat, humidity, airport lines, long transfers and occasional power disruptions can aggravate dizziness, rapid heart rate, weakness and fatigue. Travellers with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) or another form of dysautonomia should prepare around these triggers rather than relying on normal vacation routines.
Speak with your medical team before travelling
Ask whether your condition is stable enough for air travel and tropical heat. Review medication timing, fluid and sodium targets, compression garments, warning signs and what to do if symptoms worsen. Carry a concise medical summary listing your diagnosis, medications, allergies and emergency instructions.
Heat and hydration planning
- Carry oral rehydration or electrolyte packets in your hand luggage.
- Use refillable water bottles where safe drinking water is available.
- Schedule activities early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
- Confirm that your room has reliable air conditioning.
- Bring cooling towels, a portable fan and light clothing.
Medication and supplies
Bring enough medication for the entire trip plus extra days. Keep it in original pharmacy packaging and pack essential doses in your carry-on. Bring compression socks or garments, a blood-pressure monitor if recommended, and backup batteries for any device you use.
Airport and flight strategy
Request mobility or airport assistance if prolonged standing is difficult. Keep medications, fluids, snacks and documents accessible. Move your legs regularly during the flight, but follow your clinician’s advice regarding compression and circulation.
At the hotel
Choose a room close to elevators, restaurants and the lobby. Avoid long walks in direct sun, standing in buffet lines and hot showers. Tell a travel companion how to recognize a flare and where your medical information is stored.
