Anemia or iron deficiency can make Cuba’s heat, long airport days and resort walking more difficult. Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, shortness of breath and a rapid heartbeat may become more noticeable when you are dehydrated or physically active.
Prepare your medical information
- Carry a current medication and supplement list.
- Bring a short medical summary if your anemia is moderate, severe or linked to another condition.
- Keep recent laboratory results available when your clinician recommends it.
- Record emergency contacts and travel insurance information.
Pack medication and supplements correctly
Keep prescribed iron, vitamin supplements and other essential medication in your hand luggage, preferably in original labelled packaging. Bring enough for the full trip plus unexpected delays. Do not change the dose because of travel without medical advice.
Manage heat and fatigue
Plan demanding activities early in the day, rest in air-conditioned areas and drink regularly. Stand up slowly if you are prone to dizziness. Avoid pushing through unusual weakness simply to keep up with an excursion or group schedule.
Food planning
Choose regular meals that fit your medical plan. Travellers who follow a vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or otherwise restricted diet should pack suitable shelf-stable snacks because preferred foods may not always be available.
When to seek medical care
Get urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath at rest, confusion, a very rapid heartbeat, black or bloody stools, or rapidly worsening weakness. These symptoms should not be treated as ordinary vacation fatigue.
Insurance and backup planning
Declare relevant diagnoses accurately and verify coverage for pre-existing conditions. Review our Cuba travel insurance guide and prescription medication guide.
