Travelling to Cuba with celiac disease requires more than simply asking for gluten-free meals. Cross-contact, shared fryers, sauces, bread crumbs and limited product availability can create real risks.
Contact the resort before departure
Ask whether the hotel can accommodate celiac disease, not just a dietary preference. Request information about kitchen procedures, buffet separation and whether a chef can speak with you after arrival.
Bring a translated dietary card
Carry a Spanish card explaining that you cannot eat wheat, barley, rye or foods contaminated by shared utensils or cooking surfaces. Keep both printed and digital copies.
Be cautious at buffets
Choose simple foods that are prepared separately when possible: plain rice, beans, eggs, fruit, vegetables, grilled meat or fish without sauces. Ask for fresh portions from the kitchen rather than relying only on buffet trays.
Pack dependable backup food
Bring shelf-stable snacks and emergency meals permitted under airline and customs rules. Keep enough food in your carry-on for flight delays and the first day at the resort.
Watch sauces, soups and fried foods
Flour may be used as a thickener, and shared fryers can contaminate potatoes or other foods. Ask direct questions and avoid unclear dishes when communication is uncertain.
Medication and symptom planning
Bring any medication recommended by your clinician for symptom management, while understanding that it does not make gluten exposure safe. Review our medication and health-kit planning guide.
Insurance and severe symptoms
Declare celiac disease if required by your insurer and understand coverage for dehydration or other complications. Our Cuba travel insurance guide explains what to verify.
Restaurant communication
Repeat that the issue is medical and that even small amounts can cause illness. When possible, speak directly with the chef rather than relying only on a server.
When to seek medical care
Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, blood in stool, fainting or symptoms that do not improve require medical assessment.
