Talk to your doctor before departure
Review your condition, recent symptoms, medication schedule, activity limits, and flight plans. Ask whether long flights, heat, excursions, alcohol, or changes in salt intake create specific risks for you.
Bring more medication than the trip requires
Keep all essential medication in hand luggage in original labelled containers. Carry extra doses for delays and a medical letter listing generic drug names, dosages, diagnoses, allergies, and emergency contacts. Do not rely on finding the same brand or dose in Cuba.
Heat, dehydration and blood pressure
High temperatures can worsen fatigue, dizziness, low blood pressure, dehydration, and medication side effects. Drink regularly, take breaks in shade or air conditioning, and avoid the hottest part of the day when possible.
Food, salt and alcohol
Buffets and processed foods may contain more salt than expected. Choose simpler foods, control portions, and avoid heavy alcohol use, especially in the heat or when taking medication that causes dizziness.
Flights and circulation
Follow your doctor’s advice about movement, compression stockings, and blood-clot prevention. Keep medication accessible and avoid placing it in checked baggage.
When to seek urgent help
Chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, new weakness, confusion, a very irregular heartbeat, or symptoms that feel different from your usual condition require urgent medical evaluation.
Insurance and emergency planning
Confirm coverage for pre-existing cardiovascular conditions and save the insurer’s emergency number offline. Bring a concise medical summary and identify the nearest clinic or hospital before taking long excursions.
