A trip to Cuba may be manageable for some travellers with cognitive impairment, but it requires realistic assessment of mobility, confusion, wandering risk, medication needs and the caregiver’s ability to provide continuous support.
Before booking
- Discuss the trip with the traveller’s clinician.
- Choose direct, simple transportation whenever possible.
- Request accessible airport assistance and suitable resort accommodation.
- Confirm insurance coverage for the existing condition.
Medication and documents
Keep all essential medication in carry-on baggage, in original packaging. Bring a written medication schedule, medical summary, insurance details, emergency contacts and copies of identification documents.
Reducing confusion
- Maintain normal meal and sleep times.
- Use a simple written daily plan.
- Avoid leaving the traveller alone in unfamiliar areas.
- Carry a card or bracelet with the hotel name and caregiver contact information.
Heat, hydration and exhaustion
Heat and dehydration can worsen confusion. Schedule activities during cooler hours, provide frequent rest, watch fluid intake and return to an air-conditioned area if symptoms increase.
