Room refrigerators at Cuba resorts vary widely in size, age and cooling performance. Some units are designed mainly for drinks and may not maintain the stable low temperatures expected from a full household refrigerator.
Check the refrigerator after arrival
Open the unit, confirm that it is running and allow several hours before judging its performance. Check whether the door seals properly, whether the interior feels cool and whether ventilation around the unit is blocked.
Do not assume it is suitable for medication
Travellers who need temperature-controlled medication should contact the resort or tour operator before departure. Ask what storage is available, where it is located and whether access is possible at all hours. A minibar or room refrigerator should not automatically be treated as medical-grade cold storage.
Food storage precautions
- Keep perishable food only when the unit is clearly cooling.
- Do not overload the shelves or block internal airflow.
- Discard food that has remained warm for an uncertain period.
- Keep bottled water and sealed drinks separate from any leaking food.
What to do if it is not cooling
Report the problem to guest services and ask whether the unit can be repaired or replaced. If the refrigerator is essential for medication or infant supplies, explain that clearly and request an immediate alternative.
