Why elevator access matters
Many larger Cuba resorts have several floors, long corridors and buildings separated from the lobby, restaurants or beach. A room that looks convenient on a map may become difficult to use when an elevator is unavailable.
What to confirm before booking
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the building have a working elevator? | Some blocks have no elevator or only one unit. |
| Can the hotel guarantee a ground-floor or low-floor room? | Requests are not always guarantees unless confirmed in writing. |
| Are restaurants and the beach accessible without stairs? | The room may be accessible while other services are not. |
| Is there backup power for elevators? | Many elevators stop during outages. |
Best room request
Ask for a ground-floor or first-floor room close to essential services, while avoiding noisy areas such as theatres, kitchens and late-night bars. Keep the request simple and repeat it with the tour operator and hotel.
If the elevator stops working
- Report the problem to reception and ask for an estimated repair time.
- Request a temporary or permanent room change to a lower floor.
- Keep written notes and photographs if accessibility was part of the booking.
- Contact the tour representative if the hotel cannot provide a workable solution.
What to pack
- Essential medication in carry-on luggage
- A compact flashlight
- Printed hotel and emergency contacts
- Supportive footwear
- A power bank for communication during outages
Ground-floor tradeoffs and timing
A ground-floor room avoids elevator dependence but can be closer to paths, service areas, humidity or drainage. Balance accessibility with noise, privacy and flood exposure before accepting the location.
Do not wait until an excursion or airport transfer is imminent to test the route. Confirm elevator service and a step-free backup early, especially when luggage, medication or mobility assistance is involved.
