Lighting in Cuba resort rooms can vary by building, room category and maintenance condition. A room may have enough light for general use while still being dim near the bed, mirror, entrance or bathroom.
Test every light after check-in
Turn on ceiling lights, bedside lamps, bathroom lights, balcony lights and any wardrobe lighting. Check whether switches are easy to reach and whether a lamp flickers, becomes unusually hot or has exposed wiring.
Identify switch-controlled outlets
Some rooms use a key-card slot or wall switch to control part of the electrical system. An outlet may stop working when the card is removed or when a nearby switch is off. Test charging equipment before assuming the outlet is defective.
For voltage, adapters and device safety, consult our electricity guide for Cuba resorts.
Prepare for nighttime movement
Keep a small flashlight or charged phone within reach of the bed. This is useful during power interruptions and helps avoid walking through an unfamiliar room in darkness. Clear shoes, bags and furniture from the path to the bathroom.
Use compact personal lighting
- A small rechargeable flashlight is more practical than candles.
- A low-power USB light can help near a desk or bedside outlet.
- A headlamp is useful during longer outages while keeping both hands free.
- A power bank can keep personal lighting available when outlets are off.
Avoid unsafe improvisation
Do not cover lamps with clothing, towels or paper to soften the light. Do not use candles inside the room. Avoid plugging high-wattage lamps into loose adapters or overloaded power bars.
Report electrical warning signs
Stop using a fixture or outlet that sparks, smells burnt, makes unusual noise or feels excessively hot. Report the exact location to reception and keep devices disconnected until maintenance checks it.
When lighting is part of a larger maintenance issue, follow our guide to reporting and resolving Cuba resort room problems.
Before sleeping
Confirm that the route to the bathroom is clear, place a flashlight within reach and know where the room entrance is. A simple nighttime setup improves comfort and reduces falls without adding unnecessary equipment.
