FICAV Quebec Travel Compensation Fund: Coverage and Claims

Who may be protected?

The fund is designed for clients who purchase travel services through a travel agency holding a permit from Quebec’s Office de la protection du consommateur. Direct purchases from an airline, hotel or other supplier may not receive the same protection.

Situations the fund may address

• A paid transportation service is not provided.
• Accommodation or another tourism service paid through the agency is not delivered.
• An agency or supplier closes or fails to perform.
• Certain events or official advisories affect services after purchase, subject to the current rules.

What FICAV does not replace

• Emergency medical insurance.
• Full cancellation or interruption insurance.
• Baggage insurance.
• A guarantee that a traveller will like the hotel.
• Automatic reimbursement for every direct purchase.
• Duplicate compensation after another provider has already reimbursed the same loss.

Before booking

Evidence for a claim

• Complete agency invoice and proof of payment.
• Package contract and cancellation conditions.
• Emails from the agency, tour operator or supplier.
• Proof that the purchased service was not provided.
• Responses from an insurer, card issuer or supplier if another reimbursement was requested.
