Swimming pools are a major part of many Cuba resort holidays, but travellers should not assume that every pool has the same safety features, staffing or maintenance schedule.
Check the pool before entering
Look for posted depth markings, ladders, steps and visible damage around the pool deck. Avoid entering if the water appears cloudy, if lighting is poor or if maintenance work is underway.
Do not rely entirely on lifeguards
A lifeguard may not be present at all times, especially early in the morning, late in the day or at smaller pools. Parents and guardians should remain within immediate reach of young children.
Watch for slippery surfaces
Pool decks can become extremely slippery. Walk rather than run, use footwear with grip and keep bags away from wet walkways.
Ask about pool rules
- Opening and closing hours
- Depth of each section
- Whether diving is permitted
- Availability of flotation devices
- Adult-only or children’s pool restrictions
Protect valuables
Do not leave phones, passports, wallets or room keys unattended on a chair. Use the room safe when possible and bring only what you need to the pool.
For additional planning, read our Cuba resort pool chair guide and our heat and sun safety guide.
Pool safety checklist
- Depth markings checked
- Children supervised directly
- Pool deck inspected for slippery areas
- Valuables secured
- Opening hours confirmed
- Sun protection reapplied regularly
A quick inspection and active supervision can prevent most avoidable pool problems during a resort stay.
