Connecting rooms can make a Cuba resort stay easier for families and small groups, but they should never be assumed simply because two rooms were booked together. Hotels may classify adjoining, nearby and internally connected rooms differently, and final room assignment often depends on availability at check-in.
Understand the difference between room types
A connecting room has an internal door between two rooms. Adjoining rooms are usually beside each other but may not have an internal door. Nearby rooms can be in the same building or area without being directly next to one another.
When booking, use the exact wording you need. If an internal connecting door is essential, state that clearly in every request.
Request connecting rooms before travel
Contact the tour operator, travel agent and hotel before departure. Keep written confirmation of the request, but remember that a request is not always a guarantee unless the room category specifically includes a connecting arrangement.
Include the ages of children, mobility concerns and any medical reason that makes room proximity important. Clear information helps the hotel understand the priority.
Confirm again before arrival
Reconnect with the resort shortly before travel and ask whether the request appears on both reservations. Make sure the family name, booking numbers and arrival date match.
At check-in, present the request before accepting room keys. Ask the employee to confirm whether the rooms are connected, adjoining or simply in the same area.
Inspect both rooms before unpacking
Check the internal door, locks, balcony access, air conditioning, plumbing, safe, telephone and sleeping arrangements. Families with young children should verify that both sides of the connecting door can be secured appropriately.
If the arrangement is unsuitable, report the problem immediately and ask what alternatives are available. Moving early is easier than changing rooms after luggage has been fully unpacked.
Prepare a backup plan
Because room assignments can change, families should decide in advance how adults and children will be divided if connecting rooms are unavailable. Keep medication, documents and essential child supplies accessible until the final room arrangement is confirmed.
Questions to ask the hotel
- Does the room category include a true internal connecting door?
- Can the hotel guarantee the arrangement or only record a request?
- Are both rooms in the same building and on the same floor?
- Can extra beds or cribs be added safely?
- Are elevators available if rooms are on an upper floor?
- What is the process if the assigned rooms are separated?
