Where is Bacunayagua Bridge?
The bridge is located on the Vía Blanca west of Matanzas. It connects the Havana region with Matanzas and Varadero by crossing the Bacunayagua valley near the Yumurí landscape. Many travellers see it during a Havana excursion or a private transfer between Havana and Varadero.

Why the bridge matters in Cuban history
Construction began in 1956 and the bridge was completed in September 1959. Cuban engineer Luis Sáenz Duplace designed the structure. Building such a large bridge across a deep valley was a major technical challenge with the lifting equipment available in Cuba at the time.
The result is a large reinforced-concrete arch bridge. Its total length is approximately 313.5 metres, while the main arch spans 114 metres. The deck is generally reported to stand about 110 metres above the valley floor, making it the highest bridge in Cuba.
What can you see from the viewpoint?
The Mirador de Bacunayagua is located on the western side of the bridge. It offers a safer view of the structure, surrounding vegetation, valley and, when visibility is good, part of the coastline. It is the best place to take photographs without approaching highway traffic.
Food, drinks or small retail services may be available, but opening hours, inventory and accepted payment methods can change. Carry some cash and avoid planning a long stop unless it has been confirmed.
