Travelling to Cuba with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome or another digestive condition requires more preparation than a typical resort trip. Medication availability can be limited, food choices may change from day to day, and long transfers or excursions may not provide immediate bathroom access.
Talk to your healthcare provider before departure
Ask whether your condition is stable enough for travel and what to do if symptoms worsen. Request a written medication list using generic names and keep a short summary of your diagnosis, allergies and emergency instructions.
Pack medication and backup supplies
- Keep medication in original labelled containers.
- Carry essential doses in hand luggage.
- Bring oral rehydration salts, approved anti-diarrheal medication and any prescribed rescue treatment.
- Pack more ostomy, continence or hygiene supplies than normally required.
Plan around food and hydration
Choose freshly cooked foods, bottled or properly treated water, and simple meals when symptoms are active. Avoid foods that commonly trigger your condition, even when they are included at the resort buffet.
Bathroom access and excursions
Before leaving the resort, identify bathroom stops, travel time and whether the vehicle has air conditioning. Carry toilet paper, wipes, sanitizer, a change of clothing and sealable bags.
Insurance and emergency planning
Confirm that your travel insurance covers pre-existing conditions and complications related to your diagnosis. Keep the insurer’s assistance number, your policy details and a payment method accessible.
When to seek urgent care
Seek medical attention for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, blood in stool, high fever, fainting, confusion, signs of dehydration or rapidly worsening symptoms.
