Travelling to Cuba with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD or another mental health condition can be manageable, but the trip should not depend on finding replacement medication or specialized care after arrival. Medication availability can be limited, communication may be difficult and disruptions such as flight delays, power outages or poor internet access can increase stress.
Speak with your healthcare professional before travelling
Discuss the destination, length of stay, current stability, medication schedule and any recent changes in symptoms. Ask whether heat, dehydration, alcohol, sleep disruption or time-zone changes could affect your treatment.
Pack medication safely
- Carry medication in original labelled containers.
- Keep all essential doses in your carry-on baggage.
- Bring a copy of your prescription and a medication list using generic names.
- Pack more than the exact number of doses needed in case of delays.
- Do not assume the same brand or dose will be available in Cuba.
Create a personal support plan
Write down early warning signs, coping strategies, emergency contacts and the name of a trusted travel companion who understands what to do. Save important information offline because mobile service and internet access may be unreliable.
Reduce common travel triggers
Protect sleep, stay hydrated, eat regularly and avoid excessive alcohol. Build quiet time into the itinerary instead of scheduling every hour. Noise, crowds, heat and long airport waits can worsen anxiety or irritability.
Insurance and emergency care
Read the pre-existing condition clauses in your travel insurance policy. Confirm whether mental health emergencies, medication-related complications, medical evacuation and trip interruption are covered.
When to seek urgent help
Seek immediate assistance for suicidal thoughts, severe confusion, hallucinations, inability to care for yourself, dangerous behaviour, a suspected medication reaction or rapidly worsening symptoms.
