ROAD SAFETY
Scooter rental in Varadero: insurance, theft and road risks
Rental availability does not make a scooter the safest or simplest transportation choice for every traveller.
Main risks
- Poor road lighting, potholes, sand, water and debris.
- Old vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and animals sharing the road.
- Limited fuel and uncertain roadside assistance.
- Theft, disputed damage and replacement costs.
- Serious legal and financial consequences after an accident.
Insurance is not automatic
Travel medical insurance may exclude scooter or motorcycle accidents based on licence requirements, engine size, helmet use, alcohol, passenger rules or activities considered high risk. Ask the insurer for written confirmation before departure.
Before signing a rental contract
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Total price | Currency, deposit, late fees and authorized drivers. |
| Theft | Liability, replacement value and required locks. |
| Damage | Deductible, inspection procedure and dispute process. |
| Breakdown | Emergency number and replacement or towing procedure. |
| Fuel | Required fuel type, starting level and return condition. |
Inspect before leaving
- Test front and rear brakes.
- Check tyres, lights, signals and steering.
- Use a correctly fitting, undamaged helmet.
- Photograph the full scooter, mileage and fuel level.
- Keep the contract, receipt and emergency number offline.
Safer alternatives
For most visitors, an officially marked taxi, a pre-arranged driver, resort transportation or a verified bus connection reduces risk. Never drive after drinking, after dark or during heavy rain.
