Sand fleas in Varadero: reduce bites before they start
Travellers may use “sand fleas” for several tiny biting insects, including jejenes or no-see-ums. The exact insect cannot be identified from a few red bumps alone.
When bites are more likely
- Early morning and around sunset.
- After rain or near damp sand and vegetation.
- During long barefoot walks near the waterline.
- When sitting directly on sand rather than a chair or thick towel.
Practical prevention
| Action | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Use a chair or thick towel | Reduces direct contact with damp sand. |
| Protect ankles and legs | These are common bite areas. |
| Apply repellent before sunset | Waiting for the first bite is too late. |
| Rinse after the beach | Removes sand, salt and irritants from the skin. |
| Change location | A windier or drier section may be less problematic. |
What to pack
- An approved repellent suitable for your age and health profile.
- Anti-itch treatment recommended by a pharmacist.
- Antihistamine when appropriate for you.
- Gentle antiseptic, bandages and a thermometer.
- Light long clothing and sandals for evening walks.
After a bite
- Wash the area with clean water and gentle soap.
- Avoid scratching.
- Apply the treatment recommended before travel.
- Keep the area clean and monitor it.
