Antonio Maceo and Che Guevara: two figures born on June 14
Antonio Maceo fought for independence from Spain in the nineteenth century. Ernesto “Che” Guevara joined the revolution that took power in 1959. They belonged to different eras, but both were born on June 14.

Antonio Maceo, the “Bronze Titan”
Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales was born on June 14, 1845, in the Santiago de Cuba region. The son of Mariana Grajales and Marcos Maceo, he joined the independence struggle during the Ten Years’ War that began in 1868.
His battlefield experience, discipline and endurance helped him rise through the ranks. His nickname, the Bronze Titan, referred to his physical resilience, military reputation and Afro-Cuban heritage.
The Protest of Baraguá
One of the defining moments of Maceo’s life was the Protest of Baraguá on March 15, 1878. He rejected the Pact of Zanjón because it did not guarantee Cuban independence or the complete abolition of slavery.
The protest became a lasting symbol of political firmness and refusal to surrender core objectives.
The invasion campaign
During the renewed independence war that began in 1895, Maceo and Máximo Gómez helped carry the conflict from eastern Cuba toward the west. Maceo died in combat on December 7, 1896, near Punta Brava.
Ernesto Che Guevara, from Argentina to Cuba
Ernesto Guevara de la Serna was born on June 14, 1928, in Rosario, Argentina. Trained as a physician, he travelled through Latin America and became deeply affected by the poverty, inequality and political conflict he observed.
In Mexico, Guevara met Fidel and Raúl Castro and joined the group that sailed to Cuba aboard the yacht Granma in 1956. After the landing, he fought in the Sierra Maestra and became a commander in the Rebel Army.
His role after 1959
After the revolutionary victory, Guevara held several positions in the new Cuban government, including leadership roles at the National Bank and the Ministry of Industries. He also represented Cuba internationally.
He later left the island to support revolutionary movements abroad. He was captured and executed in Bolivia in October 1967.
Why are Maceo and Guevara associated?
They should not be treated as identical figures. Maceo’s principal struggle was independence from Spain. Guevara was associated with the twentieth-century Cuban Revolution and international socialist movements.
