Travelling to a Cuba resort with reduced mobility requires more preparation than simply requesting an accessible room. Hotel layouts, elevator reliability, beach access, transportation and bathroom design can vary significantly, even within the same resort category.
Ask detailed questions before booking
Do not rely only on the word “accessible” in a hotel description. Contact the tour operator or hotel and ask for specific measurements and features whenever possible.
- Is the room reached without stairs?
- Are elevators available in every building?
- Does the bathroom have a roll-in shower or a raised step?
- Are grab bars installed beside the toilet and shower?
- Is there enough space beside the bed for a wheelchair?
- Can the balcony or terrace be reached without a high threshold?
Request written confirmation, but remember that room assignments can still change. Bring a copy of all correspondence to check-in.
Resort size matters
Many Varadero resorts cover a large property with long distances between rooms, restaurants, pools and the beach. A hotel may be technically accessible while still being difficult for someone who cannot walk far.

Beach and pool access

Ask whether the property provides a beach wheelchair, pool lift or staff assistance. Never assume that equipment shown in an older photograph is still available or operational.
Elevators and power interruptions
Travellers who cannot use stairs should understand what happens if an elevator is temporarily unavailable. Ask for a ground-floor room when practical. Cuba can experience electrical interruptions, and hotel backup systems do not always power every elevator or every building.

Accessible transportation
Standard airport transfer buses may have steep steps and limited storage. Wheelchair-accessible vans are not automatically included with a vacation package.
Arrange suitable transportation in advance and obtain written confirmation. Include the wheelchair dimensions, whether it folds and whether the passenger can transfer into a regular seat.
Medication and personal care
Carry medication, mobility aids and personal-care supplies in hand luggage whenever airline rules permit. Pack enough for delays and keep prescriptions in original labelled containers.
A companion should also know where medication and emergency information are stored. Travel insurance should clearly cover pre-existing conditions and medical transportation.
At check-in
Inspect the assigned room before unpacking. Confirm the route to restaurants, exits and the beach. Report barriers immediately and request a different room if the assigned location is unsafe or impractical.
