Boca de Camarioca is a coastal village located between Varadero and Matanzas. It offers a more local atmosphere than the resort peninsula, with the sea, casas particulares, privately operated restaurants and several natural attractions nearby.
Where is Boca de Camarioca?
The village is on the north coast of Matanzas Province, west of Varadero and between the peninsula and the city of Matanzas. Travel time depends on the departure point, traffic, vehicle and fuel availability. From the hotel zone, ask reception or a reliable driver for the complete price and exact return arrangement.
Boca extends around the mouth of the Camarioca River. It is a residential coastal area and does not have the same concentration of tourist services, shops or taxis as downtown Varadero.

Saturno Cave: close to Boca, but not in the village centre
Saturno Cave is near the road connecting Varadero Airport and Matanzas. Palmares describes an underground natural pool where swimming and snorkeling are offered among stalactites and stalagmites. Hours, price, equipment and access may change, so confirm on the day of the visit.
The cave should not be treated like an ordinary beach. Access includes steps and wet or rocky surfaces. Suitable footwear, constant supervision of children and insurance covering the activity are important.
Beaches and coastline
Travellers mention Playa Los Pinos and small coastal areas around the village. These places may not have the lifeguards, warning flags, services or facilities found on Varadero’s main beaches.

A village connected with the 1965 Camarioca exodus
Boca de Camarioca has an important place in Cuba’s modern history. In September 1965, Fidel Castro announced that Cubans wishing to leave could be collected by relatives at the port of Camarioca. A chaotic arrival of small vessels from Florida followed.
U.S. State Department historical records report that boat traffic was gradually stopped and an organized evacuation of remaining refugees began in November 1965. The U.S. Coast Guard considers the Camarioca Boatlift the first large Cuban exodus to influence its migration-surveillance policies directly.
The village is not a museum, but this history explains why Camarioca appears frequently in accounts of migration between Cuba and Florida.
Eating and staying in Boca de Camarioca
The village has casas particulares and private restaurants. Establishments, menus, hours and accepted currencies can change with supplies, electricity and staff availability.
- Confirm that the establishment is open before travelling.
- Ask the price and currency before ordering.
- Carry cash in small denominations.
- Keep a backup choice when the menu is limited.
- Arrange the return taxi before dinner, especially at night.
