A lost or stolen phone in Cuba can affect communication, maps, airline access, banking and two-factor authentication. Act quickly, but do not put yourself at risk by confronting anyone or following a device into an unsafe area.
Quick answer: locate and lock the phone remotely, contact the mobile carrier, protect important accounts and keep using your printed travel backups.
Try to locate the device safely
Use Apple Find My or Google Find Hub from another trusted device. Play a sound only when you believe the phone is nearby. If the map shows an unfamiliar or unsafe location, contact hotel security or local authorities rather than attempting recovery alone.
Mark the phone as lost
Lost Mode on iPhone and the equivalent lock option on Android can secure the device and display alternate contact information. Do not remove the device from your Apple or Google account while you are still trying to locate or protect it.
Contact your mobile carrier
Ask the carrier to suspend the SIM or eSIM and discuss replacement options. Keep your device IMEI, account number and carrier contact details saved separately before travel.
Protect important accounts
- change the main email password if account access may be exposed;
- review banking and card activity;
- sign out of sensitive accounts when possible;
- change passwords saved on the device;
- contact card issuers about suspicious transactions.
Use backup authentication
Two-factor authentication can become difficult when the lost phone is the only trusted device. Before travelling, save backup codes securely and confirm that a trusted contact or second device can help with account recovery.
Report theft when appropriate
Ask hotel management where to file a report. A police or incident report may be required for insurance, device protection plans or reimbursement claims. Record the date, location and circumstances while details are fresh.
Continue the trip without the phone
Use printed copies of your hotel address, flight details, insurance, transfer information and emergency contacts. Ask the hotel to help contact the airline, insurer or transfer provider when Internet access is limited.
Prepare before departure
- enable Find My or Find Hub;
- use a strong screen lock;
- activate stolen-device protection where available;
- back up photos and documents;
- save recovery codes outside the phone;
- write down the IMEI and carrier contact number.
