Travelling to Cuba with lupus or another autoimmune disease can be possible, but the trip should be planned around medication continuity, heat tolerance, sun exposure, infection prevention and access to care. Do not rely on finding replacement medication locally.
Before booking
- Ask your treating clinician whether your condition is stable enough for travel.
- Confirm that your travel insurance covers your diagnosis, medications and possible complications.
- Check whether any medication requires refrigeration, protected storage or special documentation.
Medication planning
Bring more medication than the exact length of the trip, keep it in original pharmacy packaging and divide critical supplies between carry-on bags when possible. Carry a medication list using generic names and include the dose, schedule and reason for each prescription.
Sun and heat
Some autoimmune conditions and medications increase sensitivity to sunlight or heat. Use high-SPF sunscreen, protective clothing, shade and planned rest periods. Hydrate regularly, but follow any fluid restrictions given by your clinician.
Reducing infection risk
- Use mosquito protection.
- Wash or sanitize hands before eating.
- Avoid undercooked food and unsafe water.
- Seek medical help early for fever, severe diarrhea, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening symptoms.
