Travelling to Cuba with arthritis, fibromyalgia or another chronic pain condition can be manageable, but heat, long airport waits, uneven walking surfaces and limited access to familiar medication require advance planning.
Review medication before travelling
Carry all prescription medication in original labelled containers and keep essential doses in hand luggage. Bring a medication list using generic names, plus extra medication for delays. Confirm whether any pain medication is controlled or subject to special documentation.
Reduce strain during flights and transfers
- Request airport wheelchair or mobility assistance in advance if needed.
- Choose an aisle seat when frequent movement helps stiffness.
- Use luggage with wheels and avoid carrying heavy bags.
- Plan rest breaks during long transfers and excursions.
Heat, hydration and swelling
Hot weather can increase fatigue and may worsen swelling for some travellers. Drink regularly, avoid prolonged midday sun and use air-conditioned rest periods. Follow your clinician’s advice if you take medication that affects hydration or blood pressure.
Pack practical comfort items
Consider braces, compression garments approved by your clinician, supportive footwear, a folding cane, heat or cold products that do not require unreliable refrigeration, and a small cushion for transfers.
Insurance and pre-existing conditions
Verify that your insurance covers your diagnosed condition, medication complications, falls and emergency transportation. Keep assistance numbers and policy details offline.
When to seek urgent care
Seek medical attention for a fall with possible fracture, sudden severe swelling, chest pain, shortness of breath, new weakness or numbness, fever with a hot swollen joint, or pain that is very different from your usual symptoms.
