Travelling to Cuba with a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) requires more preparation than an ordinary resort trip. The main concerns are airport screening, medication continuity, heat, dehydration and access to appropriate cardiac care if symptoms or a device alert occur.

Documents to carry

• Your pacemaker or ICD identification card.
• A medical letter naming the device, implantation date and cardiac diagnosis.
• A complete medication list using generic drug names and doses.
• Your cardiologist’s contact information and recent relevant reports.
• Travel insurance details, including emergency evacuation coverage.

Airport security and screening

Tell screening staff that you have an implanted cardiac device before entering a scanner. Follow the device manufacturer’s and your cardiology clinic’s instructions. Do not allow a handheld screening wand to remain directly over the implant longer than necessary.

Medication and equipment

Carry all essential medication in your hand luggage, in original labelled containers, with extra doses for delays. Never rely on finding an identical prescription in Cuba. Set phone reminders if travel disrupts your routine.

Heat, dehydration and activity

Cuban heat can worsen fatigue, dizziness or low blood pressure. Drink regularly, limit alcohol, avoid intense midday activity and use air-conditioned areas when possible. Follow any fluid or salt restrictions prescribed by your medical team.

Know your warning signs

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, sustained palpitations, repeated ICD shocks or a device alarm. Do not wait for the return flight if serious symptoms appear.

Choose insurance carefully
