Cuba prepaid cards: MLC, Tropical, Clásica and cash backup
A Cuban prepaid or MLC card can be useful in a specific situation, but it should never replace a cash and outage backup plan.
Clásica card Cuba: how it works, funding and acceptance
Clásica is a Cuban prepaid card issued by FINCIMEX and denominated in USD. Official Cuban information describes it as available to both Cubans and foreigners for use inside Cuba. In April 2026, FINCIMEX also said remittance recipients could choose to deposit all or part of eligible funds into a Clásica account. Availability, funding channels and merchant acceptance can change, so verify the current conditions before sending money or buying one.
MLC card vs Clásica and Tropical
MLC generally refers to an electronic foreign-currency balance associated with Cuba’s banking system. Clásica and Tropical are named prepaid products. A person who asks for an “MLC card” may therefore mean something different from a Clásica or Tropical card. Confirm the exact issuer and card name before transferring funds.
Products travellers often confuse
- A Cuban bank account or card holding an MLC electronic balance.
- A locally issued prepaid card promoted for compatible terminals.
- A product marketed under names such as Tropical or Clásica.
- A foreign Visa or Mastercard.
- A Cubacel mobile recharge.
- Cash delivery or a direct product-delivery service.
These products are not interchangeable. A balance may be received successfully while remaining difficult to spend in the recipient’s municipality.
Questions to ask before funding a card

For travellers: build a payment backup before you fly
Do not arrive in Cuba expecting a foreign Visa or Mastercard to be your main payment method. The Banco Central de Cuba announced that the processing arrangement used for Visa and Mastercard transactions in Cuba would stop from June 6, 2026. Its notice says the established foreign-currency payment methods that remain include cash, Cuba-issued Clásica and Tropical prepaid cards, and international Mir and UnionPay cards.
- Bring usable cash as the primary fallback. Split it between secure locations rather than keeping everything in one wallet.
- Treat Clásica or Tropical as a second payment channel, not a cash replacement. A card is only useful where the merchant has a compatible, working terminal and the electronic network is available.
- Before loading a large balance, verify the exact product and funding method. Confirm the issuer, currency, fees, current loading options and where you expect to use it. If you are helping family, test a small amount first.
- Keep enough cash for essential expenses during an outage. Power, telecommunications or point-of-sale failures can temporarily make an otherwise valid card unusable.
Practical rule: plan your trip so that losing access to one payment method does not leave you unable to pay for transport, food or other essentials. Recheck the Banco Central de Cuba or the card issuer shortly before departure because payment arrangements can change.
For helping family
Ask what the recipient already uses and which stores currently accept it. A small test transfer is safer than sending a large amount to an unfamiliar product.
