Cuba Prepaid Cards 2026: Clásica, Tropical & MLC

Updated August 28, 2026: Cuba’s central bank announced that the international Visa/Mastercard processing arrangement used in Cuba was interrupted from June 6, 2026. The official notice says cash, Cuba-issued prepaid cards Clásica and Tropical, plus Mir and UnionPay remain established foreign-currency payment methods. Travellers should still carry a cash backup because acceptance and electronic service can fail.

Cuba prepaid cards: MLC, Tropical, Clásica and cash backup

A Cuban prepaid or MLC card can be useful in a specific situation, but it should never replace a cash and outage backup plan.

Quick answer: Clásica and Tropical are Cuba-issued prepaid payment options, while an MLC card or account is a different banking product. Do not assume they are interchangeable. Verify the issuer, funding method, balance currency, fees and current acceptance before relying on any card.

Clásica card Cuba: what it is

Clásica is a Cuban prepaid card issued by FINCIMEX and denominated in USD. Official Cuban information describes it as available to both Cubans and foreigners for use inside Cuba. In April 2026, FINCIMEX also said remittance recipients could choose to deposit all or part of eligible funds into a Clásica account. Availability, funding channels and merchant acceptance can change, so verify the current conditions before sending money or buying one.

MLC card vs Clásica and Tropical

MLC generally refers to an electronic foreign-currency balance associated with Cuba’s banking system. Clásica and Tropical are named prepaid products. A person who asks for an “MLC card” may therefore mean something different from a Clásica or Tropical card. Confirm the exact issuer and card name before transferring funds.

Products travellers often confuse

A Cuban bank account or card holding an MLC electronic balance.
A locally issued prepaid card promoted for compatible terminals.
A product marketed under names such as Tropical or Clásica.
A foreign Visa or Mastercard.
A Cubacel mobile recharge.
Cash delivery or a direct product-delivery service.

These products are not interchangeable. A balance may be received successfully while remaining difficult to spend in the recipient’s municipality.

Questions to ask before funding a card

For travellers

Carry sufficient cash, divide it between secure locations and keep small denominations. Treat a local card as a supplement, not the only payment method.

For helping family

Ask what the recipient already uses and which stores currently accept it. A small test transfer is safer than sending a large amount to an unfamiliar product.
