Cuba Hotel Safes: Cash, Passports and Valuables

Hotel-room safes are useful in Cuba, but travellers should still use a layered approach for cash, passports, bank cards, phones and electronics. A safe reduces casual access; it does not eliminate every risk or replace good travel habits.

What to keep in the safe

• passport when it is not required outside the hotel;
• backup cash stored separately from daily spending money;
• extra bank cards;
• insurance details and copies of travel documents;
• small electronics, jewellery and other valuables not in use.

Test the safe after check-in

Before placing valuables inside, confirm that the door closes correctly, the keypad responds and the locking instructions are clear. Lock and reopen it once while empty. If it does not work, contact reception promptly and request repair, an alternate safe or a room change.

Choose a secure code

Avoid obvious combinations such as a birth year, room number or repeated digits. Do not write the code on the safe or leave it visible. Share access only with the people who need it.

Do not keep everything in one place

Split cash into at least two secure locations. Carry only the amount expected for the day and keep a separate emergency reserve. Save document copies offline on the phone and, when practical, in secure cloud storage.

Protect phones and electronics

Do not leave phones, cameras or bags unattended on a beach chair, in a lobby or beside a pool. Salt water, sand, sudden rain and simple misplacement are common risks even when theft is not involved.

Be discreet with cash

Count money privately. Keep small bills accessible so minor purchases and tips do not require exposing the entire cash supply. Before leaving a taxi, restaurant or shop, check the wallet, phone and bags.

What to do if something disappears

1. Check the room, safe, luggage and places visited before assuming theft.
2. Report the missing item promptly to hotel security or management.
3. Record the time, location and description of the item.
4. Contact the insurer when the loss may be covered.
5. Cancel missing bank cards and change relevant passwords.

Document valuables before travel

Photograph expensive electronics and record serial numbers when available. Keep receipts for high-value items. This information can support an insurance claim, subject to policy limits and exclusions.

Before check-out

Add the safe to the final room inspection. Open it before moving luggage to the lobby and count important items while still inside the room.
