Avoid common tourist scams in Cuba
Most problems involve unclear taxi prices, poor exchange rates, counterfeit cigars, inflated bills or pressure to buy. Slow down, confirm details and keep control of your cash.
Common situations
| Situation | Safer response |
|---|---|
| Taxi without a clear price | Agree on the total before entering |
| Street currency exchange | Count carefully and avoid rushed transactions |
| “Official” cigar seller | Buy only when authenticity can be checked |
| Restaurant bill mismatch | Review prices and totals before paying |
| Unexpected guide or helper | Ask whether the service costs money first |
Protect your money
- Carry only the amount needed for the outing.
- Keep the emergency reserve in a separate place.
- Use small bills to reduce change disputes.
- Do not display all your cash.
- Save the hotel address and return transport contact offline.
Leave when pressured. A legitimate transaction does not require immediate payment before you can verify the price or product.
