Travelling to Cuba with fibromyalgia
Long flights, unfamiliar beds, heat, humidity and disrupted routines can worsen pain, fatigue and sleep problems. Careful pacing and a realistic itinerary can reduce the risk of a major flare.
Prepare with your healthcare provider
Review your current symptoms, medication plan and warning signs before departure. Ask for a medical summary and prescriptions, especially when carrying pain medication or other controlled drugs.
Protect your routine
- Keep medication in your carry-on luggage.
- Bring enough for the entire trip plus delays.
- Maintain regular sleep and meal times.
- Choose a quiet room with reliable air conditioning.
- Plan low-demand days after flights and excursions.
Manage heat and humidity
Use shaded routes, take frequent indoor breaks and avoid the strongest afternoon heat. Hydrate regularly and wear light clothing. Some people find cold air painful, so adjust air conditioning gradually rather than creating extreme temperature changes.
Make flights and transfers easier
Request airport assistance when walking and standing are difficult. Use supportive cushions, move gently during the flight and keep essential medication, water and snacks accessible.
Pack for comfort
- Comfortable footwear and loose clothing
- Small heat or cold packs allowed by the airline
- Support pillow or compact seat cushion
- Sleep mask and earplugs
- Written medication and emergency information
When symptoms need medical attention
Seek medical help for symptoms that are sudden, severe or different from your normal flares, including chest pain, fainting, weakness on one side, severe dehydration or breathing difficulty.
