This is a semantic (and English!) nuance that can cost ill-informed travel agents dearly: what is the difference between "Oceanfront" and "Oceanview" when booking a room in a hotel in the South?
Although the definitions seem simple at first glance, hoteliers can sometimes play with these terms. They may describe their rooms as having a sea view or direct access to the beach, although in reality these descriptions are often exaggerated.
Hence the importance for agents to know their products well, to regularly visit the hotels they recommend and to make sure they understand these subtleties, which can greatly influence their clients' experience. Both in terms of their stay and the image of the agent himself.
“Oceanview is not Oceanfront, that’s an important detail. More and more wholesalers are employing local representatives at the destination, and not Quebecers, which is unfortunate because it makes a big difference. Sometimes you have to ask the hotel for compensation,” explains a travel agent, who preferred to remain anonymous. “A lot of agents are not aware of this, and it’s a shame because customers are often disappointed... An “Oceanview” room can simply mean that you have to stand on the balcony to see a little bit of sea. This happens frequently in Cuba, where hotels must leave a natural space between the buildings and the beach, so there are few truly “Oceanfront” rooms.”
What is an “Oceanfront” room?
An "Oceanfront" room should logically be located on the seafront, directly on the beach, or just a few steps away. The sea view is omnipresent, without any obstacles. These are generally the most popular rooms, and therefore the most expensive. If your client attaches particular importance to the view, it may be wise to recommend an "Oceanfront" room to guarantee an unobstructed view, in line with their expectations.
Be careful though: some hoteliers can twist the term "Oceanfront" by placing rooms on the seafront, but with balconies overlooking the gardens. It is therefore essential to check that the sea view is included in the often high price of this type of room.
What is an “Oceanview” room?
Oceanview rooms have a view of the sea, but the definition can vary. It can range from a panoramic view from the balcony to a mere glimpse of the ocean in the distance between two palm trees. Many guests say they are fooled by these rooms, expecting to see the sea from their balcony, when they sometimes have to lean out or squint to catch a glimpse of the ocean.
