Proof of Health Insurance: An Official Obligation
According to the Canadian government, you must present proof of valid health insurance for the duration of your stay in Cuba. All insurance policies are accepted, except those issued by American companies. If you cannot provide this proof upon arrival, you will need to purchase health insurance from a Cuban company.
Although your provincial health insurance card is recognized in Cuba, it is strongly recommended to purchase additional travel insurance. Indeed, your provincial plan may only cover part of the medical expenses, and some expenses must be paid in advance in Cuba. It is therefore imperative to present an insurance policy, an insurance certificate or a medical assistance card (a paper copy is sufficient).
Although this requirement is rarely checked upon arrival, it is an official obligation that is best respected.
Copies of Your Travel Documents
As a security measure, we recommend that you save all your travel documents on multiple email accounts and print them in duplicate. Each traveler should have a copy of the documents, including airline tickets, hotel reservations, and photocopies of passport. In case of lost or delayed luggage, this could save you some hassle.
What Do You Need to Present to Leave Varadero?
In 2024, departure formalities from Varadero airport have been simplified. Most Canadian travelers only need to present their passport to board. However, it is always prudent to keep a paper copy of your return ticket to avoid any problems.
