José "Joseíto" Fernández Díaz (born September 5, 1908 in Barrio de Los Sitios, Havana, Cuba - died October 11, 1979 in Havana) is one of Cuba's most emblematic musicians and composers. He is best known for creating the music for the famous Guajira Guantanamera, set to the immortal verses of José Martí.
An early passion for music
By the age of twelve, Joseíto was already showing an interest in music, singing serenades in his neighborhood with his friends. Although he never received any academic musical training, his passion led him to form amateur trios and sextets before performing with various typical Cuban orchestras.
Modest but decisive beginnings
In his youth, Joseíto worked at various trades to support his family, including shoemaking and selling newspapers. This hard life didn't dampen his talent or creativity. In the late 1920s, he began working at a radio station in Guantánamo. It wasn't until 1928, however, that he gained national recognition for his composition of Guajira Guantanamera.
The radio era: a springboard for his art
In 1943, Joseíto Fernandez became a leading voice on Cuban radio with his program L'événement du jour. Broadcast for fourteen years, this program combined music and social news stories, reflecting the reality of the times while showcasing his unique style.
A belated international success
Although already a favorite in Cuba, Joseíto achieved worldwide fame in 1963 when American singer Pete Seeger performedGuajira Guantanamera at Carnegie Hall in New York. This performance introduced his work to an international audience and made him a symbol of Cuban culture.
In 1971, Pete Seeger met Joseíto during a visit to Cuba, marking the beginning of a sincere friendship between the two artists. Their relationship testifies to the universal reach of music, transcending borders and ideologies.
A timeless legacy
Joseíto Fernández died on October 11, 1979, but his legacy lives on. Today,Guajira Guantanamera is much more than a song: it's a universal hymn celebrating the beauty and richness of Cuban culture.
