Cuba announced Tuesday that it would soon release 553 prisoners, following U.S. President Joe Biden's decision to remove the island from a state sponsorship blacklist.
In a memorandum released Tuesday by the White House, the move was described as a "goodwill gesture" by a senior U.S. official.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced the move on the X network, saying the prisoners would be released gradually, in accordance with Cuba's judicial system.
Cuba's Foreign Ministry also said the release followed a letter from President Diaz-Canel to Pope Francis earlier this year.
In addition to removing Cuba from the blacklist, Biden suspended the possibility of legal action over expropriations in Cuba and lifted some financial restrictions to support negotiations brokered by the Catholic Church.
These decisions mark a break with the measures adopted by former President Donald Trump, who had put Cuba back on this list shortly before the end of his term.
