In my hotel restaurants, how do I know what I can and cannot wear?
One rule that seems pretty universal to me is that of course you don't enter an indoor restaurant in a swimsuit, especially if you're still dripping with sea water.
This is both out of respect for other customers (it's not nice to sit on a wet chair...) and also for safety reasons (wet floors become very slippery). However, in restaurants and outdoor bars called "beach bars", it is perfectly acceptable to show up in a swimsuit.
Air Transat, in its new hotel information sheets, offers fairly specific information that can help you. They can guide people who have hesitations. Even if you booked with another tour operator (Sunwing, Air Canada, etc.), the information remains relevant. Here is an example for a 5-star hotel.
And in restaurants in town?
From what I could see, at noon the dress is “casual” everywhere, for both women and men. You see everything: light dresses, shorts, camisoles, etc. But again, no swimsuits, at least on Primera Avenida.
In restaurants like Varadero 60, you will find more men in light long pants and shirts (especially short sleeves), but you will also see Bermuda shorts. Women often wear light dresses or slightly more “chic” outfits (no ball gowns though!). Often, they will simply add jewelry or accessories to add a little touch of elegance.
In simpler restaurants, especially those with outdoor terraces on Primera Avenida, I would say that anything “decent” is accepted.
Ties
I couldn't say what you see in 4 star hotels and above, but from what I have observed myself, it is very rare to see men wearing ties, except at hotel reception and even then!
In short, the tie is not a “must” in Varadero!
