Hotel names in Varadero change frequently: why?

100% Cuban hotels

Some hotels in Varadero, such as Los Delfines, Kawama, Villa Tortuga, and Brisas del Caribe, are fully owned by the Cuban government. There are two major national hotel groups: Cubanacan, which is part of the Ministry of Tourism (MinTur) and includes the Islazul and Gran Caribe brands, and Gaviota, which is run by the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).

The advantages of these hotels are numerous: they are often well located, close to the city center, and offer affordable rates for tighter budgets. However, they are generally older, and some sections may need renovation. Unlike others, these hotels rarely change their name.

Hotels in partnership between Cuba and international chains

Other hotels in Varadero are managed in partnership with international chains. The Cuban government retains at least 51% of the property, while the other 49% is entrusted to a foreign hotel chain, such as Meliá or Iberostar. These management contracts are often renegotiated every 4 to 10 years. When the foreign chain chooses not to renew its contract, another company can take over management, sometimes resulting in a name change.

For example, Arenas Blancas became Occidental Arenas Blancas after being managed as Barceló Arenas Blancas. Additionally, a new manager may decide to change the name entirely to reflect their brand, as was the case in 2018 when Playa del Oro became Muthu Playa Varadero. This change is often accompanied by renovations.

Hotels managed by international chains often have higher quality standards, but at a higher price. Some members of our community point out that the quality of management can also make a difference: some managers are very present and ensure that operations run smoothly, while others are more discreet. This can vary, as it does anywhere in the world.

Should this influence my choice of hotel?

It seems that choosing a hotel in Varadero depends mainly on specific criteria, such as budget, tour operator options from the departure city, and entertainment. Affiliation with a particular hotel chain is not always decisive, although some people prefer to choose a chain that they have enjoyed in other Caribbean destinations.

Restrictions for Americans

American travelers cannot stay in 100% Cuban hotels. American tour operators therefore do not offer packages to these establishments, but some travelers organizing their stay themselves sometimes manage to get around this restriction, although it can be complicated.
