The recent earthquake in Cuba was a landmark event, with five main tremors recorded in just 24 hours, as well as significant seismic activity. In all, more than 800 aftershocks were reported after the initial tremors, many of them strong enough to be felt in different parts of the country, particularly in eastern Cuba.
Information on the tremors and their magnitudes is presented in the table below:
The tremors were felt mainly in the provinces around Santiago de Cuba,
Cuban authorities, in collaboration with local seismological networks, continue to monitor the situation closely, although the likelihood of further major tremors remains. Residents of the eastern provinces, where the tremors were strongest, remain particularly vigilant, especially as a strong tremor can lead to even more aftershocks.
These earthquakes caused damage in some areas, although no casualties were reported.
This sequence of earthquakes is a reminder of the seismic activity that regularly affects this region, due to the proximity of the tectonic faults that run through Cuba and the island of Hispaniola. Although the situation remains under control, experts continue to closely monitor the evolution of tremors and aftershocks.
